Some time before dawn, I showered and crept downstairs. The house was still in darkness. Somewhere from outside, an animal made a strange laughing sound.

I startled, let out a squeak and pressed a hand to my chest.

Once my heart slowed again, I stopped to really listen. It was a strange sound, but definitely not a person or a screamspinner. I decided it was harmless.

Hopefully.

"It's a kookaburra." Rick's voice sounded in the gloom.

I jumped again. "A what?" I laughed to cover my embarrassment at being scared twice in a short amount of time.

"It's a kind of bird." A light clicked on. He stood near the kitchen sink, his face lined, weary. He didn't look as though he'd slept much, if at all.

"I see. They sound very interesting," I said politely. I stepped around him and turned the electric kettle on.

His eyes stayed on me the entire time. "I suppose they do." He paused for a moment before he spoke again. "Why are you here? "

"I thought I'd make some tea and toast," I replied.

He snorted. "That's not what I meant. I mean, why here? Why Australia? Why my home?"

I saw the unasked question in his eyes. Why my brother?

I exhaled softly. "To be honest, I don't know. Fletcher made his way to the fae realm without me. It was sheer luck I found him at all. Otherwise he might still be stuck down there, in the dark." Near the room where the dark magic artefacts were locked behind an ordinary looking door.

"Seems like one hell of a coincidence." He leaned against the kitchen bench and crossed his arms over his chest.

"It would be if it was one," I agreed. "I don't think any of this is. Someone, long ago, knew dark magic would draw lesser magic to it. They left a failsafe if it did. It just happened to have been set off by us."

"Or it was set off and it was you who answered," he suggested. "Maybe Fletcher's presence is still a coincidence."

"Maybe," I agreed. "But not mine, Saff or Ash. Tavar too, if the portal sucked her through. I still think Fletcher has a role to play."

"A human, a fae and a troll walked into a bar," he muttered.

"Exactly," I replied.

His head jerked and he stared at me. "What?"

"Fae have visited the human realm for generations," I replied. "Some humans know about us, but most don't. Few humans reach the fae realm but never without a fae. Trolls working with both—it's unheard of. That it's happening now speaks a whole library of volumes about how important this all is."

"To you," he said. "Not to the human realm."

The kettle clicked off and I poured tea into a cup, over a teabag. While it steeped, I turned back to Rick .

"I think the two realms are inextricably connected. If the fae realm dies, the taint will cross over to this realm. No offence, but the human realm is polluted already. Add the taint and life as you all know it could be gone in a few blinks.
